THE RIPPLE EFFECT - As our constant, relentless search for wise musical sources ensues, it becomes tempting to lower the standards. There are just so many ad-fueled, scenester-plagued distros disguised as credible music sources pumping out praise for their own product, finding one with decent writing alone is tempting enough to include here.

But just when I'm about to succumb and recommend some tainted "me, too" website that echoes with the sounds of salesmen, I stumble upon THE RIPPLE EFFECT. Not only does this Blogger-based web source feature exceptional writing from site proprietors Todd Severin and "Pope" John Rancik, their taste in the heavy and obscure lines up intimately with ours at the dog site. The variety of different genres, from indie rock to punk to metal and beyond, as well as the depth of musical analysis is exactly the type of site most of our readers should bookmark.

The way THE RIPPLE EFFECT works is thus: if it's reviewed, it's recommended. The focus is describing and detailing music you haven't heard, but need to experience. SIR LORD BALTIMORE's massive "Kingdom Come" record is described as "a whirlwind ravaging the earth; fierce and loud and mean and everything that became heavy." MOS GENERATOR's "Songs For Future Gods" is "A custom-made air-guitar freakout", while EXCEL's "The Joke's On You" is "jam packed with neck wrenching tempo changes and body slamming riffs." You get the idea.

Reading the blog, there's no off-putting musical ignorance, content poaching, or pretentious, genre-damning listen to how smart I am cyber-babble that some web geniuses enthusiastically spew (cough, cough...Hansel...cough, cough). In fact, one gets the impression that these guys would spread the word with carrier pigeons if that was the only medium available. It's all about turning rock addicts with hungry ears onto fresh, vital music of the past and present. Sound familiar? Then get thy scurvy arse over to the Ripple Effect and check out the good word! Shalom.
