The BNR Metal Pages: This website is set up to be the ultimate heavy metal dictionary of bands. The site was created by Brian Russ (who was featured in our “Guitargument” section not too long ago). The alphabetical listings are the way to go and one could argue that this is the ultimate heavy metal bible. It is pretty damn well complete and I really like the way Brian puts each group’s lineup along with the album discography. The somewhat unbiased band bios are fairly spartan and one could go to other websites to find out more if they are really interested.

There are also yearly top ten lists, which come in pretty handy. These lists go all the way back to the late sixties. It’s kind of weird to see the earlier lists (up to the mid seventies) with only three or four albums listed. You could say metal music took its time to define itself over the years. And speaking of definitions there is a section explaining the metal subgenres.

This cognizant list includes everything from the new wave of British metal, thrash, death metal, and power metal all the way down the pike to doom, stoner rock and what not. It’s hard to determine how many times I will find myself referring to this site for pertinent info in the near future. I feel my earlier reviews may have had more bite had I known about this site! It’s the ultimate resource.
