Pick of the month:
MIDNIGHT IDOLS - "Nightrulers"
Well, I'm hearing no real improvement since I threw their first 7" at a wall back around 1995. I've never seen these guys but I know them. Ex-hardcore kids (probably straight edge) discover booze and then decide to disassociate themselves from it by listening to grind and metal. Starting a real band was too much work and besides grind/power violence is "in" so let's just make a bunch of racket and I'll write "funny" songs with zany song titles that are a bit risque but not like A.C., RUPTURE, SPAZZ, or SORE THROAT who actually have talent to some degree and are actually funny. Don't forget making sure people know you really do drugs! No really! You do!
Anyways, what can I say. They play really short songs that all kinda sound the same (machine gun drums, noodley guitar and mosh part, then start again, then end). They all seem to be about how they do drugs and I guess that makes them either shocking or cool. They rip off BASTARD NOISE and other serious noise artists, using zany samples like SPAZZ did, and they even end with hip hop like SPAZZ did on one of their records. They've put out records on all the cool indies so now it's major indie madness. It all sounds calculated right? It is. There's a ton of bands like this out there. Like I said, I've never seen this band and yet I know them, because there's one in every town.
If you want a boring and predictable band that sounds like any of the bands above then this is for you. People who like PIG DESTROYER like this band. Skinny guys in size-small black shirts with white belts like this band. People who stretch their ears for the latest pet rock of this season lwill get into this. Me, I'd rather listen to the bands they rip off. If you like this I hate you. If you like this you still think saying "fag" is shocking. If you like this you probably drive an SUV your parents bought, and festooned it with all your favorite bands of this week. I can't wait till this trend passes. SPAZZy grind is the new EARTH CRISIS is the new ska is the new pop punk is the new grunge. God, I hate stupid underground trends. This reeks of 'em. Blah.
