  • Folks will talk about "top ten favorite songs" for a particular genre, and I always have a hard time with that context, simply because I find that albums are often like books. To take individual songs and judge them is sometimes like judging a brilliant novel by just a single chapter.

Such is the case with this excellent new CD from ARGONAUT, "Shoot the Moon". Not only is every song an exercise in heaviness, catchiness, and depth, but the way the album flows is top-notch as well. I find myself making a lot of SOUNDGARDEN comparisons with this band, probably due to Dave Takata's elephant-noise guitar fills and Brandon Boote's spectacular drumming. Check out "Neanderthong"'s Kim Thayil-flavored guitar noise and hooks over a godly rumbling groove. The ups and downs here just keep me coming back to this disc again and again. "Karate Bar" is another simple high-octane trip to Badmotorfinger-land with tight bass lines locked into Boote's crashes and rolls, flowing right into "The Ungrown", a 7+ min smoker with bongos, trippy mellow interludes, and Matt Sader's cool Lee Dorrian vocals! Highly recommended for SOUNDGARDEN junkies or fans of quality stoner rock.
