  • I just love a good three-piece band. If three guys can pull off a sound that most bands struggle to create with 4 or 5 members, I am in heaven. Trios just have that raw, barebones, no bullshit feel that I love. ATOMIC NUMBER 76 out of NYC is such a band.

On this 4-track EP, they have just kicked back and let the rock take them. And friends, the rock has taken them to a great place. The opening track sets the scene, beginning with a basic, almost mechanical beat, accompanied by an ultra fuzzed-out bass. The guitar kicks in and slowly builds up a strange kind of tension, and when Bingo Sanatra opens his mouth to sing, it is like a release valve to that tension as the band glides into a laid-back, 70s-style groove.

The EP pretty much follows this formula for the next 2 songs. The final song, "Spirit", picks up the speed a notch and removes just enough of that easygoing vibe to remind you that you are still rocking. Technically speaking, I would describe "Spirit" as riffing in the same vein as MOTÖRHEAD, plus fuzz, minus the Lemmy rasp. Not so technically, I would say it is quite pleasant to my ears! Obviously to present a great, full sound like this, all members must be pulling their weight musically. ATOMIC NUMBER 76 has achieved a great old-school rock sound, while maintaining a modern edge. If it's stoner rock with a great groove that you are after, then check out this EP - you will not be disappointed.
