  • Angstrom triumphs again.

  • Remember these guys? You don't? Well, you know SUPAFUZZ right? HERMANO? TAILDRAGGER? Before all that was the cream of the crop three-piece, BLACK CAT BONE. This band features David Angstrom on guitar and vocals, Mark Hendricks on bass, and Jon McGee on the tubs (as the liner notes proclaim). As I have alluded to, they later went on to play in those "other" bands. If you love cool fuzzed-out 70's rock with a twist, this is for you. David Angstrom - he can sing, he can play, and I think he can even dance...at least I think it was his G-string I put a dollar in last week. Anyway, this record came as kind of a surprise to me. I thought that the first BCB record, "Truth" was the only BCB record, period. When I browsed the Mine's Bigger site, this and all the other BCB stuff available jumped to the top of my 'must have' list.

I love the sounds that Angstrom gets from his guitar, and when he is playing, something just seems to click into place. He can wail alongside anyone, and shows more passion and finesse on this disc than I have heard from him before. There exists in this band a real passion for the music, not any trend-seeking, or wave-riding. "Little World" shows amazing versatility in that some funk elements creep in, and quickly take over your mind and your speakers. The bass sounds like it is right next to you the entire time, and the harmonica sounds like it belongs in a dusty blues bar. "There's No Angels" has the most Bonham-esque drums that I have heard since the "Coda" record. All the songs have superb production and sound quality, better than a lot of today's recordings. The first 11 tracks are produced by Chris Goss (UNIDA, QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE, MASTERS OF REALITY, KYUSS) and there are three awesome bonus tracks produced by David Barrick (NASHVILLE PUSSY, KENTUCKY HEADHUNTERS) making this a 14 track monster. You haven't lived until you've heard Angstrom sing "Tales of Brave Ulysses". Go forth and buy young people.
