  • Have you ever been shot down when suggesting Mexican food for dinner? I’ve often found that discussions of CLUTCH often go the same route. Now, I’m not talking about Taco Hell, or the sub par cheapo Mex restaurants that dispense bland, Americanized versions of Mexican food. I mean quality stuff…lotsa kick and spice, goes down smooth, and won’t land you in the restroom for an hour afterwards. But oftentimes, suggesting a Mexican feast is met with “Uh, I’m not into spicy food.” or “I’m not feeling that adventurous.” Same thing when I talk about the liquid funk grooves and footstompin’ vibe of MD’s finest. “I’m not really into ‘em”, “I don’t like his voice.” and “I just don’t get that band.” are some common responses I’ve heard, and it leaves me scratching my head every time.

"Blast Tyrant" is totally irresistible. The new album is about everything this band does well, and they do it all better than ever. Neil Fallon’s voice is as strong as ever, sounding like a combination of Phil Rind bark and a little George Clinton. For my money, this CD throws you in the hell bus on the very first track, and doesn’t drop you off until the very last note. Really, this baby just flies by. Every song picks you up with great riffs and spectacular drumming. For example, take the deep blues acoustic sounds of “The Regulator”. This is just an incredible tune…a real snazzy combination of in-yer-face percussion, funky vocals, and Delta-style blues. It’s so nice to hear a band that’s not afraid to show off a little musicianship and real guitar playing without sacrificing an ounce of groove. And I’m talking real groove from front to back as evidenced in killers like “The Mob Goes Wild”. These tunes will have you drifting into the next lane, playing your air drums, and shouting the lyrics out loud. Just remember to watch for oncoming traffic and try an enchilada when you get home.
