  • THE DIVINE BROWN - "The Dirty Gospel According to…" 2004 (Wrecked Em)
  • Get yourself healed!

  • There are some bands out there that try their hardest to rock people to their core and yet they fail, often quite miserably. Then there are those exceptional bands that easily create great bone-shaking rock 'n roll. THE DIVINE BROWN fall into this second category. These guys would rock my fucking socks even if they smoked a heep of weed and went acoustic.

What we have here is 12 beer-fueled tracks straight out of some dark dingy pub. This band has been touring with a couple of bands from down south, New Zealand’s D4 and THE DATSUNS. I really like both of these bands. Live they are a treat and the DATSUNS first album is great. However I think THE DIVINE BROWN just might blow them away! This album contains some ingredients that make a great rock album:

  • - Obviously a great filthy guitar sound with thumping drums and driving bass.
  • - A great sense of humor that is evident throughout the album and all over the CD cover.
  • - Constant self-referencing throughout the album, you’ve got to love that.
  • - Song titles like “ Kings of Shit City”, “Kranked Up Really High” and “ Hell Yeah! I’m Damned”
  • - Paralleling dirty rock 'n roll to religion.
  • - A clap along song and a song that contains a one note piano as perfected by the STOOGES.
  • "The Dirty Gospel According to the Divine Brown" is the best ballbreaking pure rock 'n roll album that I have heard this year. It is rock with great attitude, but at the same time would make a great party album as it does groove and could produce some wonderful drunken moves on the dance floor. The album is produced wonderfully and contains some well-placed samples that add to the whole religious concept that the band is trying to convey. Despite their huge sound, THE BROWN still sound down-to-earth and do not sound pretentious or too flamboyant. If you are a fan of dirty rock 'n roll this album will be a religious experience. Hear the gospel now or forever be damned to a STROKES and JET hell.
