The title track that opens this second full-length by Kansas rock'n'rollers FILTHY JIM is a virtual heavy metal wet dream. Starting as a slow SABBATH-dirge and culminating into some old school heavy metal riffage that should make all lovers of the NWOBHM very happy. Now THAT is how you start an album!!
Most of the tracks that follow are more straight ahead rock, roughly situated somewhere between ZEKE and MUDHONEY. The heavy metal overtone stems from the leads and the occasional twin guitar bit. The shrieking vocals, bringing to mind Kurt Brecht (DRI) and John Connely (NUCLEAR ASSAULT) give it a kind of hardcore edge as well. As the album nears its end we're back in heavy metal territory again. First with the thrashy "Goat Strain" and finally with a cover of ALICE COOPER's "Is It My Body". Although it doesn't top the original of course it's very well done and a nice addition to FILTHY JIM's own material.
Yes, this is a short review but at 33 minutes, so is this record. With this kind of music that's enough though. And what kind of music would that be? Well, I could say something more about FILTHY JIM's sound, saying how they combine the best of punk, heavy metal and rock 'n roll blah blah blah. But the fact that FILTHY JIM is actually slang for a used condom should tell you enough. Yep, rock 'n roll indeed!!
