Andy Winter is a classical pianist hailing from Norway, a country that brings us so much musical joy. He's also the backbone and creative force of WINDS, whose lineup reads almost like some sort of supergroup. Drummer Jan Axel von Blomberg, is also known as "Hellhammer" from MAYHEM. Guitar genius Carl August Tideman comes from Norweigan prog metal band TRITONUS, and Lars Eric Si (vocals/bass) is known for his work with black metallers KHOLD.
Winter has combined his love of classical music and metal in a very powerful and effective way. The whole album is peppered with touches of brilliant classical piano as well as the odd cello and violin. The musicianship is phenomenal. Some of you that have read my reviews know that I'm not a big fan of guitar virtuosos, but I have to admit that Tideman's lead guitar work is quite impressive. Blomberg’s work behind the skins, while not too flashy, is very tight and professional, as you would expect it to be.
The songs contain a good balance between power and heartfelt classical emotion. This is a great album, and fans of prog metal will love it. I think it has enough of its own originality to be classed as a great release, and if you like the mix of classical with the headbanging stuff this is a must-buy.
