  • Dear SOCIAL CHAOS,

Here are the facts as they stand. You take a look at them and tell me what doesn't fit.

You are from Brazil. Home of bands like COLERA, OHLO SECO, etc. You really like CRUDE SS and other Swede/Finn bands. You recorded in a trash can past full the day before garbage day. You named yourselves after a traveling music festival featuring a buncha old timer English bands. Your drummer sounds like he is trying to do the D beat but is quadruple timing it to the point of falling out of step. You're cramming so many words in that it sounds like you are stuttering the sound "guh" over and over with a separate Muppet voice stuttering "yag" a lot from time to time.

I am DISappointed by this. Seriously. When I first saw Brazil I hoped for something better despite the crummy name. I even crossed my fingers that maybe it would get a little metal ala early SEPULTURA if it wasn't going to be punk/hardcore. It just comes out corny to these ears. Maybe it's the ultra shitty production that makes it sound all muddy? Dunno.

Regardless, I can't recommend this to anyone unless they are a die hard collector of foreign bands. I'm just super underwhelmed by it. Even a few touches like not cramming every word in the dictionary into each song, getting a new drummer or lowering the kick drum in the mix, raising the guitar and cleaning up some of that mud would make a great improvement.

And before you say "But I thought you liked crummy recordings!" - I do! But, in this case it sounds like they are using solid state amps and you can muddy that up without it sounding like, well, mud. I enjoy crummy underproduced racket but not when I can't tell the bass from the guitar and when everything drum and vocal wise distracts from the songs. And, well, the songs are always important aren't they? You can write non songs and come out ok but if you plan to write some then I damn well better be able to hear them. In this case you have failed.

    Sincerely,

    Me

PS - Don't use the trial version of Photoshop to make your cover next time and don't put a sticker on a CD-R to hide the fact that it's a CD-R. Looks lame.
