With this record, along with the recently released CORTEZ disc, Belgium's Buzzville Records, from out of nowhere, is making its claim on the world of classic stoner rock. Deville's debut full length launches them in a vein not entirely unlike their Boston-based label-mates, but thankfully, this Swedish four-piece brings just enough of their own personality to the table to set them apart.
The band wastes no time (well, maybe a little time if you count the 41 second instrumental build-up Intro track, the necessity of which could probably be argued) in making their mission statement. "Sunset Capricorn" starts things proper with a heavy, bluesy shuffle a la later day CORROSION OF CONFORMITY. The C.O.C., as well as the KYUSS desert rock influences are continuously present, evidenced by the warm grooves that reverberate throughout the disc. Add a little bit of a 90's alt rock flavor, (SOUNDGARDEN, NIRVANA, etc…) and you've pretty much nailed the DEVILLE sound.
In addition to providing a decent level of heaviness, these boys are very tuneful, and clearly know their way around a hook. This talent is rare in underground rock these days, but it also has the potential to become a double edged sword. "Deserter" comes close to careening off into FOO FIGHTERS mainstream rock radio territory, but thankfully, things are kept on track. If the band can manage to temper their pop leanings with the proper amount of aggression as they do on "Come Heavy Sleep," they should be a force to be reckoned with on future releases.
