  • NADJA - "Skin Turns To Glass", 2008 reissue
  • (The End Records)
  • Invocative ear damage.

  • You wouldn't know it from listening to this, but only two members make up NADJA. Aidan Baker supplies us with guitar, vocals, woodwinds and drum programming, while his partner Leah Buckareff adds bass and vocals. Best be prepared for a big sound as things are going to get loud!

Opening piece "Sandskin" creeps up on you, just as your preparing for a lengthy dronefest huge GODFLESH style rhythms begin to pound there way into your ears. As the track evolves I was reminded of perhaps GODSPEED YOU! BLACK EMPEROR run through a distortion box. As interesting as that piece was, it didn't quite prepare me for the title track "Skin Turns To Glass" which adds undecipherable vocals and even more atmosphere to the previous song's post-industrial drone metal. "Slow Loss" wastes no time blending huge riffage, pounding drum machine and noise like a collaboration between MERZBOW and 'Street Cleaner' era GODFLESH. The remainder of this 80 minute recording is an untitled spacey ambient loop piece, providing much-needed ear relief.

Although NADJA isn't the kind of outfit I see returning to on a regular basis, pieces like "Skin Turns To Glass" struck me as a most original blend of styles and that alone is reason enough to recommend this cd to fans of the more experimental reaches of metal.
