Often the mere idea of a progressive/power metal concept album is enough to make me shudder. Not because I don't enjoy that particular genre - it's actually one of my favorites - but concept albums so often seem to forget the song in their quest for the story. Thankfully, the Swedish outfit NATION BEYOND doesn’t fall into those trappings.
Comprised of death metal outfits DEBASE and FACE DOWN, this band couldn't be further from that style. NATION BEYOND presents a tuneful blend of guitar- and keyboard- led progressive metal featuring the excellent vocals of newcomer, Nielz Lindstrom, who offers a soaring touch somewhat similar to Jorn Lande.
Song-wise this sucker is packed with classy tunes like "In the Ashes", "New Eden City" and even a freakin' top-notch power ballad "SoulMates," adding fine female vocalist Sara Heurlin. Add in a great 28-page lyric / art booklet, an interesting story line, a nice digipak cover, and this just might be one of the best metal releases of the year.
