  • DISSECTION / REBIRTH OF DISSECTION - "Maha Kali" , 2004 (Escapi)
  • A curious rebirth.

  • First of all, I am not quite sure about the name of the band, it could be DISSECTION, or it may be REBIRTH OF DISSECTION. I don't know. If you heard this new single by the band formerly known as DISSECTION, you wouldn't really care, but you may be confused. The reason for the confusion is that the two songs featured here take on very different directions.

The first song, "Maha Kali", is a mixture of mid-tempo power metal, and Germanic thrash, although a little on the light side. The lyrics have to do with the "wrathful black Hindu goddess of Mahapralaya, the great dissolution of the cosmos..." whatever the fuck that means. Vocals from the band are of a Tom Angelripper type, while some operatic female vocals flutter in and out, as well as some spoken word pieces.

The second song (the B-side?) comes in with 90 mph drums (or would I have to make that in kilometers per hour?) and some very good dual-axe work. The rhythms are not too fast, and the drums do slow down from time to time. A very listenable track, although I really don't know which face of this single is the "true" face of the band. All together, "Maha Kali" is a keeper. I have had my interest peaked to hear some more. By the way, my 'research rats' have told me that the band was called DISSECTION, until one of the members went to prison. When he paid his debt to society, the band decided that it was a new beginning, hence the adding of "Rebirth of" to the name. Kinda makes you wanna cry, doesn't it? I guess we will see the screenplay on the Lifetime Channel next week with Jon Stamos playing the lead, and Tina Youthers as the "Wacky Warden". At any rate, looking forward to the full-length.
