EPOCH OF UNLIGHT are a death metal band led by drummer and principal songwriter Tino LoSicco. "The Continuum Hypothesis" is a pretty straight-ahead black / death metal record with a lot of time changes and vocals reminiscent of many Norwegian black metal bands. There's lots of great riffing by guitarist Josh Braddock as well as some great drumming by LoSicco. For the most part, this is a really good album. Good songs, well played. Musically the two best songs "Highgate" and "Broken Pendulum" are written by Braddock. The riffing and time changes seem to be a little more interesting. The rest of the album is written by LoSicco.
Musically what I would have liked to have seen from this record was more contrast, as in the the song "Abberant Shadows", where the music slows down and there is a nice melodic guitar solo to end the song. Would really have liked to have heard more soloing in general from Braddock, an exceptional guitar player. Still there are some great melodic moments throughout this record. Another problem I have with this album is that the bass is buried in the mix and sort of takes away for the overall heaviness and fullness of an otherwise very heavy album. I like my bass. Lastly, the guitar tones are questionable. I think if this album had been engineered and mixed correctly it would have been much better. Still a good record and I would be curious as to how this band sounds live. I have the feeling they would sound a lot better.
