  • If Sweden’s MAHARAJAS had existed back in 1966, it could have spelled major trouble for bands like COUNT FIVE and ? AND THE MYSTERIANS. But even without the wayback machine, their music is still finger-poppin’ spectacular. “A Third Opinion” shows the band hasn’t lost any momentum since last year’s remarkable “Unrelated Statements” disc. Ulf Guttormsson’s burbling bass prowess is exceptional, swarming over addictive rockers like “Ethanol Rocket II” and “A Hole In My Head” with seasoned finesse. Jens Lindberg still croons and whimpers like Michael Nesmith’s long lost twin. “Flying” is sugar-frosted BYRDS/VELVETS jangle-rock heaven. Plus, the hopelessly riffy NAZZ-style opener “I’m Crackin’ Up” is easily their best track to date. It's like a giant musical hot fudge sundae for the ears to enjoy again and again. This isn’t just music for garage rock collectors. I'd recommend a copy to anyone who has ever enjoyed a KINKS or SMALL FACES tune. In short, they’ve done it again, folks. Bring on the chicks with the plastic dresses.
