  • FUNEROT - "Invasion of the Death Dimension", 2006 (Razorback)
  • Speak robot or die!
  • Ahhhhh. It’s refreshing to hear some old school thrash/hardcore with absolutely no nu-metal/rap rhythmic leanings at all! According to the liner notes for “Invasion from the Death Dimension,” this was recorded in 2005, but it sounds straight out of ’86. I would even go as far to say that this disc should stand alongside WITCHCRAFT’s self-titled record in its perfect replication of a sound and vibe long since passed. More records should sound like this.

From the aforementioned warm, refreshingly unproduced sound of the disc, to the poor man’s Pushead cover scrawl, this record has a very welcome DIY vibe to it. Some cool sound clips from classic sci-fi films serve as the perfect segues between tunes. I think some bands from the ROB ZOMBIE generation rely on this gimmick a little too much, hoping that kitsch appeal from an obvious sound byte will lure people in. Here, it suits the atmosphere of the album perfectly, adding to the timelessness of it all. With song titles like “The Man With the Megaton Mind,” “Exterminate the Macrohumanoids,” as well as the title cut, you can pretty much figure out where their heads are at. Good stuff!

If your mom ever busted your balls about listening to S.O.D.’s “Speak English or Die” too loud, this record is for you.
