  • MOTHER SUPERIOR - "Grande", 2008 (Kicking Records)
  • A French odds 'n sods sort of thing.

  • Warning: this is not the new MOTHER SUPERIOR album. Apparently they have a new label in France and "Grande" is a kind of introduction to those folks. MOTHER SUPERIOR is the 'mother' of all session bands (sorry). It would appear that conquering Europe is the next item on their 'to do' list.

There are three new songs here (well, technically two). There's the epic "Brain Child", which sounds funny enough like a hard rock song from the golden 70s era. Then there's a churning slow blues song "Moanin", and the third song is a cover of THE BEATLES classic, "Happiness is a Warm Gun", from which the band took it's name years ago. So what else do we have here? There are a few smoking live songs, "Five Stars" and "Jaded Little Princess", kindly introduced by the host of a Spanish radio show and it sounds excellent. Then there's a couple of songs that get the remix treatment like "Get That Girl", "Meltdown" and "Let It Go" on which producer / musician Daniel Lanois makes a guest appearance.

MOTHER SUPERIOR is a remarkable band that can handle a plethora of different musical styles. The die-hard fans may want to buy this to have the collection complete, but for the curious people out there, I recommend starting with one of the regular studio albums. They're very much worth exploring.
