ORBIT SERVICE are a four-piece band out of the Denver area comprised of Michael and Jeff Morris, Matthew Mensch, and lyricist Randall Frazier. Their website does not say much about the history of the band, but apparently 'Twilight' is their second record and I believe their first is to be released on their newly established Helmet Room Recordings label. This is probably one of the most mellow and melodic albums I have heard in a long time.
Although "Twilight" it is fairly slow-paced, there is a lot going on here. It is a very ambient record with all instruments intertwining very well, and offers by far the best use of accordion I have ever heard. The best way I can describe the sound of this album is to think of what you would get if you mixed PORTISHEAD, a little PINK FLOYD, RADIOHEAD, and the slower side of PORCUPINE TREE. But this band doesn't sound like any of those bands individually; they definitely have their own thing going on. Also, this album was recorded very well. I really like the acoustic guitar and drum sounds throughout. At times their sound is simple, and at others dramatic and huge, and there's a lot of cool sampling going on.
'Twilight' or the band ORBIT SERVICE is probably not for everyone, and you probably have to be in the mood to get into this album, but it is very good. It's a great record to relax and wind down to after a long day. Stand out songs are ''Start Dreaming'' and ''How I Know You To Lie'', both of which feature some great haunting acoustic guitar, as well as ''Dark Orange Sunset'' which features some nice accordion and some very melodic guitar playing. Even if this type of music is not your thing, the songs should be strong enough and interesting enough to hold your attention. I could have used less of the drawn-out ambient sound effects going on like in "High Orbit", but there's no use splitting hairs. Fans of the above-mentioned bands should enjoy ORBIT SERVICE. To the rest of our readers, I would say make sure you are in the right mood, then give it a listen.
