I do love me some primitive stomp. Gimme some ultra rough pre-war blue or hillbilly music and I am happy. But, I just don't get the same excitement out of this that I would get from the originators. I don't feel even close to the excitement you get from Hasil Adkins or Willie Brown. This just feels like some falseness. Like "Love's Disease" sounds like poorly recorded SIMON AND GARFUNKEL. As a matter of fact, the bulk of this sounds like mainstream folk songs recorded poorly with a few whoos! thrown in for good measure. I don't get it. I won't either.
I won't because I think this is a dead medium, aside from a few people who can pull it off (and this is coming from someone who still listens to hardcore). The difference is that hardcore hasn't existed since the 20's. It hasn't been bastardized so many times that it's pointless at this point to bother with it. Sometimes people use my liking hardcore as a way to argue about stuff I feel is a dead medium - and I get a kick out of it for this very reason. You can't compare genres that have over 50 years of time between 'em. It just doesn't work, and besides, this shit still sounds like the ballady stuff SIMON AND GARFUNKEL did.
Bottom line: lo fi blooze/country punk this ain't, and people that dig this shit and it's atypical rockabilly imagery are, typically honkeys who don't really dig blues, country, or punk very much. All this shit was blown out of the water by THE WHITE STRIPES signing anyways as well as the glut of KING KHAN/BBQ records. All the people with any brains who need something to latch onto have moved onto other things. I guess now that the last nail was put into the garage coffin some of the last riders of that wave need another one to jump onto two years too late. This one's for you.
