Never have I been a huge fan of death metal, but I have always held a warm place in my heart and tons of respect for CANNIBAL CORPSE. When I was in high school, I used to study their CDs every time I was at the record store, giggling in amazement their brazenly brutal song titles. When I finally got a dupe of “Hammer Smashed Face,” from a friend, I found that the music did indeed match the over-the-top nature of their titles in every way. Through the years, the band has stuck to their guns, never selling out or going soft. On “Kill,” the band is still not compromising their sound and/or vision. If you’ve heard ‘em before, you probably know what to expect.
Well, the song titles aren’t quite up to the level of “Meat Hook Sodomy,” or “Entrails Ripped From a Virgin’s C*nt,” but “Barbaric Bludgeonings” and “Brain Removal Device” might still give a rise to sick kids in the back of record stores everywhere. The vocals from George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher are surprisingly clean and more understandable than what I remember of CANNIBAL CORPSE. There has been scores and scores of death metal wannabes, crappy death/doom acts and even indie acts that have appropriated this vocal delivery in past few years that have rendered CANNIBAL CORPSE almost commercial! Well, maybe that’s an exaggeration, but those acts have unwittingly made this veteran act more listenable to me. This disc was a warm, tall glass of “keepin’ it real,” and I always appreciate that!
