Wait - isn't "My Empty Room" is a QUEENSRŸCHE song? While we're at it, "The Grand Illusion" is a STYX album, right? Well anyway, this is a very interesting release from Danish prog rockers MY EMPTY ROOM. I haven't heard keyboards like this since the 80s, and probably for very good reason. This is good bar-band type music, something in the background while you get your happy hour drunk on. Every once in awhile, you turn your head toward the stage, telling your buddies to pause their story 'cause a bright spot in the entertainment has come about. Then, for just the same inexplicable reason, it is gone, and you go back to slamming your Schlitz. There wasn't much here to keep my attention focused on the music, the structure is wavy, the changes are many, and you have four songs of which the shortest is almost eight and a ha lf minutes long. Musically, a cross between weak DREAM THEATER, and maybe STYX or SAGA or TOTO or countless other forgotten "Where are They Now?" bands of the 80s.
The guitar work is decent here, but the keys and the vocals have got to go. Maybe the drummer and the guitar player could start something else, and forget to leave a forwarding address. This thing is weak, and like an old house, it is probably better to tear it down and rebuild.
