I have seen these guys live here in South Florida a number of times. The way the band executes a heavy and deep sound with the very jangly layered guitars is not something I see very often down here and this may be why this band (along with fellow Floridians DOOMS DE POP) is drawing larger crowds at a somewhat brisk but steady pace. This is one of those rare situations where the band is building a following on the merit of its music more than anything else. I’ve always dug them onstage but I think I prefer the recorded stuff even better. I never realized how much they remind me of FIREHOSE. I miss my FIREHOSE, thank you very much. Drummer Nicolas is every bit as technical and artistic as George Hurley. Jon, the other half of the rhythm section on bass, at times gives Mike Watt a run for his money as well. Danny on guitar is somewhat reminiscent of Ed from Ohio’s axwork to a degree. Always the captivating showman, singer JD sings a tad bit like Ed from Ohio, but there is a maybe little more Maynard Whatshisname, Michael Stipe, David Yow and mostly well… JD.
Stuff like “Wide Night (mp)” is almost up there with MISSION OF BURMA’s reunion disc and I do not say this lightly. In light of these comparisons/reference points the band have a unique chemistry of their own. If any group in this wretched region should be the next band to break nationally it should be these guys. This EP is well-written, produced and recorded. The six tracks on this disc all draw the listener into SAYONARA TOKYO's web-like world of sound.
