It’s all here. From PERE UBU, THINKING FELLER’S UNION LOCAL 282, DOG FACED HERMANS, THE EX, and CAROLINER RAINBOW REAR END HERNIA PUPPET SHOW to the local Columbus, Ohio influence of the late JIM SHEPERD fronted legends such as VERTICLAL SLIT and V3. They could also be described as TALKING HEADS on crack if I were writing this as a mainstream lamestream review for Rolling Stone I suppose.
The album opener “Driving the Interstate” and the closing composition “Cloud 151” convey this vocally and sonically. One of the weaker (mainly due to the cheesy chick vocals) cuts “Stalking Mark E. Smith Around NYC” is not a bad FALL tribute although I prefer BARBARA MANNING’s “Mark E. and Brie”. “Colors & 1” ends in a barrage of feedback and squall worthy of SONIC YOUTH’s “Bad Moon Rising” era when the feedback and tape loops were front and center. “Ultraviolent” bounces around quite spastically as the title may suggest. “CEA1620” is as lo fi as it gets. “Innerspace” is relatively straight ahead compared to the rest of “The Hackled Ruff and Shoulder Mane”. Another low point here is “The Knife Song” which also unnecessarily contains cute and coy female vocals, which all but ruin the song. Luckily the pace is picked up by “To the Bar” and “The Governors Wife”. Some may argue that NECROPOLIS sound acerbic to the untrained ear, but who care! Like I need to cater to the clueless.
