With 70's PENTAGRAM worship still at an all time high and the self titled WITCHCRAFT release still a sacred cow on underground rock Internet message boards around the world, the time is right for LAMP OF THOTH. This UK trio's demo is another delicious slab of lo-fi doom much in the vein of the aforementioned releases.
LAMP OF THOTH is not quite as derivative as some of the other retro-doomsters out there. The biggest difference is the uniquely British sound that the band has. If metal existed during Victorian-era England, LAMP OF THOTH would be at the forefront of the scene. Never is that point clearer than in their signature, self titled song. Lyrically, the band gleefully extols the virtues of Satan through much of the release, bringing to mind BLACK WIDOW's classic "Sacrifice" album. At times, their devotion to Old Nick can be a little TOO over the top, as the falsetto chanting found in the up-tempo section of the eight minute epic "Pagan Daze" comes a little too close to SPINAL TAP real estate for comfort. But, overall, the mood on "I Love the Lamp" should be consistently foreboding enough to please the darkest of souls.
