Here is how much of an ass I can be at times (if you ask any of my friends, it is all the time). I put on this new DEBRIS INC for review-type purposes. So here I am, listening for the first time, thinking to myself that this band lacks direction. Some songs are doom-like, some are punky, and I've heard these riffs before. Shit, I've even heard these guitar solos before! What the fuck is going on here, plagiarism? What a rip-off! So I says to the editor, "You gave me this thing to review, and...." thank God he didn't let me say anymore before he explained to me just who this band is. Ron Holzner of TROUBLE fame on bass, and the living embodiment of doom, Dave Chandler (ST. VITUS) on guitar! No shit I've heard this before, I grew up on this shit! Dave and Ron decided to take a break form the seriousness that has occupied their earlier music careers, do something fun, and make it entertaining. They wrote some songs that pay homage to 80s punk legends like CIRCLE JERKS, MINOR THREAT, BLACK FLAG, and DEAD KENNEDYs, and added some crusty doom that jumps right out of the sleeve of the first VITUS album, and stabs you in the eye. "Pain", is now a favorite in my book. The mix of styles here is difficult to understand at first, but don't try, Dave and Ron don't give a fuck! 17 songs here, each with their own personality and depth, although, some aren't very deep at all.
At this point, I say kudos to the the DEBRIS INC boys for making a fun record, and giving it almost that 'PROBOT' feel, music for the sake of music. This is not music to please record companies or even fans necessarily. Just music to drink and smoke to. By the way, the drunken stupor cover of FEAR's "I Love Living in the City" is every bit as good as the original, and the cover of X's "Nausea" with Karyn from CRISIS is an apt fit for this spastic record that takes off in more directions than young men at a crack bust. Thank God Dave and Ron are still around and kicking - ass-kicking that is.
