PT have been around for some 20 years now and usually get lumped in with the 'prog rock' crowd when it comes to describing them. Sitting somewhere closer to the polished culture of Gilmour lead PINK FLOYD than the sometimes overblown symphonic pretensions of classic YES they also encompass that metallic edge so prevalent in today's 'proggers' although albeit not as much as DREAM THEATRE, a band that plays to a similar audience.
A complete conceptual work the discs split, in good prog fashion, into six 'movements'. Although given the twists, turns and variation within it could quite easily be sixty if they so wished. The most outstanding of which is the 17 minute epic centerpiece "Anesthetize" which also boasts a guest solo from RUSH guitarist ALEX LIFESON. A further guest slot by another progressive legend Robert Fripp, providing 'soundscapes' on "Way Out Of Here" further underlines their growing stature as well as augmenting a beautiful piece.
The complexity of this music means you have to sit and listen properly for it to be really effective. Stick it on whilst doing other things and much of it's nuances will pass by unnoticed. Likewise if you just want to bang your head or waste the minutes this isn't the album. For interesting, deep and encompassing music however that will carry you away this is top drawer. An impressive example of precision, modern progressive rock with depth, detail yet still retaining it's feeling.
For me personally this is 'mood' music. I can't just play this and enjoy it but if I make time it grabs me. I can then see why this is so well received by so many. In fact, released in April this year, it's already achieved strong chart showings worldwide and pretty much universally positive reviews. A high placing on the UK's Download festival also underlines a move to the big league for the British band.
