I’ve got this dog. This dog hates cats - really HATES cats. When this dog sees a cat, she goes full tilt until she can’t go anymore. Not playful barking, mind you (the word ‘carnage’ comes to mind). This is how CATARACT can be viewed in the metal world. Coming on the scene in 1998, this is their fourth full-length release, and second for the mighty Metal Blade. Initially more of a hardcore band, their sound has progressed to one of heavy thrash with some hardcore style in the vocal department.
Sounds churning out from the “Kingdom” disc are not entirely fresh and groundbreaking, but they emanate some of the best SLAYER-esque metal since the last good SLAYER record (let's leave that discussion for another day). The use of the twin guitar attack, and plenty of destructive and dark solos give nods to many non-SLAYER bands, KREATOR and TESTAMENT come to mind. However, the vocals which rely mostly on metalcore-ish HATEBREED-ish shouts, can become a bit tiring heading into the eleventh track.
The production here is top-notch, with the drums coming on so crisp and clean that they almost feel created, and not played. No annoying kick drums going on here though, which give the record more of a new-thrash feel than many of the bands coming out today. CATARACT has one speed….fast! There are no ‘South of Heaven’ tracks here. Everything takes on a sense of an emergency of the adrenaline-fueled variety.
CATARACT gives us their all here, and you will feel worn out after just one listen. The band keeps true to the old, while giving nods to the new. Do not overlook this one on your next CD excursion. Metal Blade will make sure this disc is available all over the place, so pick it up.
