An English five piece formed originally as HUMANITY in 2000 and now reborn after a line-up shuffle and name change to AWAKE last year, with this release being their first under that name and for Lion Music.
For me, a pleasant change from many of the progressive metal exponents currently finding favour as AWAKE seem to combine a more traditionally prog-rock platform with melodic tendencies that at times see them cross effortlessly into commercial territory whilst still retaining a heavy edge thanks to some suitably weighty guitar riffing. Additionally they seem to sound like they're truly performing the music where a number of prog-metal releases can sound more like they're programmed rather than played.
I'll admit the deep vocals of lead singer Simon Shedwell weren't immediately to my liking but after a few listens I realised he adds a dark, smooth texture to the songs. In fact at a number of points on the album he reminds me a lot of GARY HUGHES from another British epic rock band TEN. The TEN similarities surprisingly raised themselves a few times on this album as "Begin Again" brought to mind "Yesterday Lies In The Flames" with "Forgiven Now Forever" and "Dream Within" also having a touch of the pomp and heavy melody of that band as well.
Elsewhere, on opener "Disbelief" or "Choices In Time" for instance the guitars are heavier and more incessant giving the band a more direct and heavy sound typical of the genre their label is promoting them within but in truth lovers of heavier melodic rock as well as the progressive metal crowd will appreciate this album with its soaring solos and clean, polished and warm production.
Much is made of the connection with Swedish band EVERGREY on the blurb with Tom Englund both producing and adding backing vocals but whatever the influence and guidance AWAKE have produced a fine melodic metal album that rates as one of the best things I've heard yet on the Lion label.
