This second album by Danish psych-rockers CAUSA SUI starts with its very mellow acoustic title track, which contrasts nicely with the second tune, a pounding HAWKWIND/MONSTER MAGNET-style psychedelic hard rock scorcher called "Lotus". Alright, looks like this 'ride' is going to be fun! And fun this definitely is if you're into old-fashioned psychedelic hard rock. There's lots of bands who try this kind of thing but merely end up being boring and/or 'retro'. CAUSA SUI are one of the few bands who can actually pull it off. Yes, musically they're a blend of HAWKWIND, HENDRIX, BLUE CHEER and other bands and artists of hard rock history but the sound is very Heavy, very now. And their songs are way too good to dismiss 'em as merely 'retro'. It's hard to pick a favorite because there's really not a dud to be found but I am particularly in awe of the aforementioned "Lotus", the second half of "Top Of The Hill" with it's mega-heavy guitar-and-organ riff, the impossibly beautiful acoustic intermezzo "Flowers Of Eventide" and the 15-minute album closer "Newborn Road". With their self-titled debut album CAUSA SUI were simply a promising band, with their second album they have definitely delivered on that promise. Yes, it's that good! Recommended for anyone into COLOUR HAZE, early MONSTER MAGNET or any of the bands mentioned above.
