A fairly commendable debut release from Albuquereque trio DEVIL RIDING SHOTGUN as they unleash their self released, self financed and self titled follow-up to a 4 song demo published in January 2006.
For the most part a mix of bass heavy, doom influenced grind, deep and moody vocals and heavy rhthym it's made interesting by some stirring lead guitar straight out of the book of classic rock.
"She" and "Dream" offer differing levels of misery mid album, "Walk" shows as a decent cut thanks to that impressive guitar and "Love To Hate You" takes a catchy opening lick, supercedes it with a chugging rythym and adds a suitably morose lyric to produce a decent track second in.
Far and away the most accomplished number to these ears though is the excellent, six minute plus "Here We Go". Another memorable lead guitar performance, with a lick that's almost boogie rock on a go-slow, it has a chorus that even hints at getting anthemic. In fact it's almost a shame here that they remember the downtuned, downbeat theme of the album and reign it in!
At the end of the day it's a decent, heavy stoner-rock disc that despite possessing little of huge originality or groundbreaking promise is actually thirty minutes well spent.
