'Coextinction' by PLAYERS CLUB is sorta hard to pin down as far as style goes. The best way I can describe it is a mixture of HELMET, UNSANE, and SHELLAC. When the first track, "The E.M.P." comes on, I'm thinking it's good, but nothing really special.
Then the next song ,"Things You Can’t Imagine" kicks in, starting off with a heavy sort of slow trudging riff that turns into a choppy, catchy rhythm with a cool guitar hook. Some of these little guitar hooks and fills remind me of Bob Mould’s SUGAR. So far so good. Next up is "Safety Word", by far my favorite. A mellow, distorted guitar with a great kind of mesmerizing melody line over the top. The vocals come in and we get more of an upbeat vibe. The vocals are doubled and somewhat harmonized which fits the song perfectly. It sort of reminds me of the mellower side of JAWBREAKER. "Flux" is more of a balls-out rocker sporting some elements of HELMET. The last song is appropriately titled "Song To Make You Hate Me", and obviously designed to annoy the hell out of you, which I thought was actually kind of funny. This band reminds me a lot of what was going on musically when I was in college in the early/mid nineties. I say we need more bands making this kind of music! My only real problem with the EP is that it needs a little more low end in the mix. It is very mid-rangey and abrasive, but perhaps that's the point. At the end of the day "Coextinction" is still a very good disc.
