The debut release from this Florida three-piece is a largely inoffensive bit of good ol' "alternative" rock. Don't bust out the flannels just yet, as these boys seem to be looking forward just as much as they are backward. While clearing bringing to mind bands like late 80's/90's alt rock bands like DINOSAUR JR, the band obviously has current rock trends squarely in their viewmaster, as well.
Singer/guitarist Richard Ridinger provides the allotted amount of ambient guitar jangle to keep all the "post rock" nerds happy, and his vocals, thankfully, fall just shy of the "annoying and whiny" border. Also, a nice, airy and clear studio sound coupled with a mammoth drum tone prevents the record from sounding like too much of a 90's Seattle retread. The only real problem with LASERHEAD is the same problem that lies with a lot of bands out there. The songs, with their similar delivery and atmosphere, tend to blend together, going in one ear, and out the other. There isn't really one song that jumps out of the speakers demanding your attention. "Sink" and "Escaping XI City," with their liberal use of wah wah pedal and slightly elevated tempos, come the closest to making an impression, but it's a shame that none of the material is really given the chance to catch fire.
Still, LASERHEAD combine their influences in a very tasteful way, and provide for us a unique listening experience. If they can keep it together and grow as musicians with their next release, the future looks bright for LASERHEAD.
