Tired of bands that call themselves “psychedelic rock” when what they really mean is “our songs are way too long and have no focus”? Or how about instrumental bands that sell the souls of their songs for the opportunity to show off how many notes per second they can play? If the answer to either of the above questions is “yes”, then Argentina’s POSEIDOTICA are the solution!
These cats pour just the right combination of talent and depth into each and every track on this disc. Think about it this way: If DON CABALLERO was just a tad bit flashier and had more Latin influence, “La Distancia” would be the result. And just like those guys, POSEIDOTICA have perfect balance. While the dreamy guitar effects, UFO whistling and frequent breakdowns earn them their “psychedelic” tag, nobody can deny that there is some seriously spot-on guitar work going on here. And on the subject of balance, there’s also a tasteful mix between the totally spaced-out (“Tiempo y Espacio” and “Equinoccio”) and the more intense guitar rock (“Campo Magnetico” and “Maldita”). Oh, and they have one other secret weapon: HOOKS! Hard to believe, right? A great sound and great songwriting! So not only is this the go-to album for when you and your little friends are smoking your marijuana cigarettes, but it’s also tailor-made for… wait for it… folks who just want a solid rock ‘n roll record!
One note, though: All the text on this album (song titles, liner notes, etc.) is in Spanish. There also appears to be a lengthy narration written by bassist Martin Rodriguez, meaning that this could very well be a concept album (anyone who’s fluent, let us know!). Not that it matters too much, though, because anyone who tries out “La Distancia” is going to be so deeply immersed in the experience that they’ll never want to come out. Pay attention, all you post-rock bands… this is how it’s done!
