  • GAS HUFFER "Lemonade For Vampires", 2005 (Estrus)
  • I can't decide...anything.

  • I sit here in the dark, listening to the interesting freakout free-form jazz intro to this album only to be smacked by a power slam of power chord. Suddenly, I forget that it's raining, I'm hung over, and I have to try and make my voice work despite the burn from last night's booze session in just a few hours. But then the music really kicks in and I dunno what to think. It's on one hand super dirgy, slippery, slimey chords that make you feel drunk. The other it's THE MONKEES doing SONICS covers. The fortune cookie last night was right when it said "confusion lies ahead".

One one hand it's all greasy chicken fingers sliding down the frets and sounding demented. Fucked up even. On the other hand these backup vocals are too sugary and the vocals make me cringe at some points because they are just sour at some points. They remind me of Lester Bangs' caterwauling with THE DELINQUENTS. There are some heavy moments on it that I enjoy but I just don't know. GAS HUFFER is one of those bands whose individual parts are great, but thrown together sometimes you're just not into it. A lot of this sounds like a hundred other bands and really makes me want to dig out the handful of "Nuggets" type records I own as well as a MUDHONEY record or two.

MUDHONEY! That's it! People either get MUDHONEY or they don't. This is the same thing. You're either in on it or you hate it. And here I sit, hours after trying to type this out drunk. Decided I didn't like the first go round and gave it another whirl. I'm still really lost on it. Life is so much easier when I can love or hate something and just roll with it. Now, here I am, stuck with no epiphany regarding this. No rock 'n roll zen. Not even a stray fart to guide me in my attempts. The peanut gallery is mute and I haven't got much time to think at this point.
