  • (Blackheart Records)
  • Ambassadors of intelligent punk.

  • Classy punk rock from Cleveland? Who knew? THE VACANCIES have just released their second full-length on Joan Jett's Blackheart label in the form of "Tantrum", and while it may be a highly polished affair crammed full of memorable harmonies and catchy hooks, don't be fooled - this ain't pop. These guys are packing a serious arsenal of clever and imaginative lyrics chock-full of sarcasm and play-on-words. Following the blitzkrieg rant of "Compound", we have the witty ode to depression "Below Merlot", that reminds us that the nectar of the gods "ain't worth 50 bucks". Afterwards, there's the incredibly visual "Sick Modern Era", the protest gone wrong in "Hand of Fear" and the powerful metaphor of a rock icon giving someone strength in "Strummer". But the strongest statement on this album is the track "Believe", where singer Billy Crooked confesses that, in a world of doubt, at least he can say "I believe in my stereo". Hells… fucking… yeah!

The only real low point on this album is the bonus track "Savior", and only because acoustic punk is beyond this reviewer's ability to comprehend. Beyond that, "Tantrum" is a comfortable album that has enough charm to make a listener who grew up on MAIDEN as opposed to MINOR THREAT feel much less like a stranger in a strange land. It's easy to see what Joan Jett sees in these guys, and it's relieving to know that she hasn't forgotten her roots. So check out… um… check IN to THE VACANCIES, because rooms are filling quickly!
