Dagnabbit if this ain’t a real slab of genuine rock gawdliness. Listen up all you kiddies and ripened old fogies, because it doesn’t happen that often. THE BEAUTIFUL MOTHERS are a Seattle-based three-piece that aren’t interested in their respective Microsoft certifications as much as burying us in splendid grooves. On first listen, it may seem like grunge (there’s some in there for sure), but it isn’t anything like half of the Cobain-lite wannabees that have broken your heart and left you so vulnerable.
The guitars are cunning, fuzzed-out blasts of pure neato, kinda like the black-coffee Gibson tones of the early SOUNDGARDEN singles, but shorter and more concise in a FU MANCHU air guitar sort of way. Drummer Robert Wheeler will not be receiving a math degree anytime soon either, because he’s too busy crackin’ them cymbals and layin’ it down Phil Rudd style. Crisp and mighty production that’s in your face like that bouncer at that bachelor party your girlfriend doesn’t know about (that stripper glitter stuff just doesn’t ever totally wash off, does it?). The whole disc just flies by, leaving an overall impression that the band is grade A hella tight like those early GNR records. “The Chisler” and “Let It End” are some of the best riff-heavy adrenaline driving tunes of the year, coupled with Eric Balaban’s screeching Bon-style screams for no apparent reason. Contact THE BEAUTIFUL MOTHERS today and then take them home to test your drinking water.
