Most of us have found ourselves in one of those American sizzling-fajita-pepper-jack--whatever restaurant places from time to time, carefully keeping our drinks on cardboard coasters and trying not to get busted gawking at the young hostesses. Anyway, most of these places have amazingly authentic garage-sale kind of stuff from the 50s, 60s, 70s, etc.. like old service station signs, phonographs, tractor parts, etc. all bolted to the walls to add atmosphere. I guess people want to feel like they're eating a buffalo chicken sandwich in grandpa's dusty garage. It's amazing how genuine some of that old stuff looks, with rust spots and faded colors, that sort of thing. This disc from ORANGE SUNSHINE is kinda the same way. The tones, the recording, the artwork, everything about it is amazingly close to an old faded vinyl gem from under the staircase.

"Homo Erectus" was released on vinyl in very small quantities in 2001, and while there's no arguing that vinyl is the ideal format for this humming, crashing, acid excursion, the cd issue is pretty neato. For some reason, I was expecting some COSMIC DEALER kind of proggy fuzz from these heavy tulip-pickers (what was I thinking? there's a tank on the cover for Chrissake!). But alas, it's more of a late 60s affair a la BLUES CREATION, CREAM or BLUE CHEER. And really, if you've just worn out every piece of vinyl that has a cover of "Parchman Farm" (or "Parchment Farm", depending on how they spell it), then the $20 you'll lay out for this import is dough well spent. By the way, the pick of the litter on this puppy is far and away, "Luv Me", with it's caterwauling Gibson leads and killer Mitch Mitchell-flavored stickwork. Make chicken wraps, not war.
