Lazy and spacy pop-rock (a la MAZZY STAR), mixed with a more straight up singer/songwriter titivation. Not that I do not appreciate quality songsmiths, but the latter is the lamer here. Although “Sometime In The Morning” is somewhat atmospheric, several of these tracks are a tad too middle-of-the-road for my tastes. Lavella has a very consummate vocal ability yet her singing is too far up in the mix and some the tracks are too produced sounding to these ears. Her voice is so dry and up-front that things get claustrophobic. There is a lot to be said about the use of reverb and some light delays. There should be some of that here and there is not. There is some really neat droning guitar throughout this disc that needs to come up in the mix as well. God, how I would love to remix some of these tracks. That said “Heart As My Own” has the sound done right with drums that are slamming yet ambient.
I would comment more on individual compositions here but I can’t be bothered. The tracks listed here are not numbered. I find this annoying and I think record labels and the artists they promote should take note of this. The song titles are inside as well with musician credits but who cares when they are again not numbered. I get a headache looking at the track number on the CD player and having to count through a list. It’s not artsy or mysterious - it’s just fucking irritating.
