Sometimes, you can judge a book by its cover. Or back cover, in this case. Just look at the photo of AT ALL COST adorning the back of their new CD. A couple of Zakk Wylde imitators, and the rest emo-haircut, sensitive types. What you find on the CD is exactly what you would expect these guys to sound like given their appearance. This is a perfect example of the formulaic Nu/Screamo type swill that pollutes the FM radio "modern rock" airwaves today. It has it all: start/stop guitar nonsense triggered double bass drum ridiculousness, and dueling vocalists (one dude screams and hollers, and the other sings and whines about pain we can not possibly understand.) Even the song titles are somewhat an admission of their generic-ness, “The Formula,” “Fabricated,” and “What is Left to Inspire?” among them.
That's not to say the disc is without moments of experimentation. "Noches Desesperadas" is a comparatively atmospheric instrumental tune featuring guitar, bongos and tambourine. The track "Fabricated" seemingly features some vocals through a talk box. I've always had a fascination with the talk box since hearing the "Live Bootleg" version of AEROSMITH's "Walk This Way" as a kid. Sadly, it's use here isn't as memorable.
If they can push their more experimental side a little more, maybe this band would be able to record an album worth listening to. Until then, stick to the FM dial, doggies.
