I may hate myself for digging this the same way I feel like a lame-o for watching the entire EAGLES PBS special. I did not just watch it to get a kick out of Joe Walsh’s utterly stupid-looking pants, mind you. Ok, accusing TOM FULLER of being that middle-of-the road may be a stretch.
Let’s just say this CD has the feel of an epic major label release. Think TOM PETTY, JOHN LENNON, CROWDED HOUSE, AL STEWART, etc with less lyrical ability on the plate. This is what I believe Fuller is shooting for musically and it’s hard to argue that he has not succeeded in spades. It’s hard for me to believe that Mr. Fuller listens back to this and says to himself “If only I done this here and that there, the recording would be flawless”. He even mentioned at the start of the CD booklet that he had no time restraints to record this. This was recorded in Nashville and mastered at Muscle Shoals so obviously the song itself is at the forefront. Yes, this is a songwriter’s album and there are some good songs contained here. Even though the packaging of this CD coveys space-time and well…medieval imagery, this hardly sounds anything like HAWKWIND. Duh. Most of the lyrics are fairly unimpressive lovey dovey stuff. It’s ok cause most of melodies supercede the words anyways. “No Goodbyes”, the album’s closer, is especially a gratifying listen. The lyrics on this one are as good as the melody. “Chasing An Illusion” may not be a mind-blowing listen, but it’s a not bad for a relaxing rainy afternoon like today. Not bad at all.
