Baltimore's AGAINST NATURE is a reconfiguration of the classic doom metal band REVELATION. Since reuniting in 2004, the band has been on a tear, writing and recording several albums worth of material in just three short years, and in a ballsy move, has made most of it available to download for FREE (!) on the band's website!
AGAINST NATURE continues the brand of thoughtful, introspective doom metal that REVELATION began years ago. This is the line up that recorded the classic disc "Salvation's Answer," (guitarist/vocalist John Brenner, bassist Bert Hall, Jr. and drummer Steve Branagan) and it's apparent to anyone with ears that their fire hasn't been diluted with age. Their latest labor of love "The Anxiety of Influence," is comprised of two epic tracks, "Aporia" and "Mimesis," both clocking in at around the twenty five minute mark. Bands writing songs of this length run the risk of becoming a self-indulgent bore-fest, but luckily, AGAINST NATURE steers clear of that pitfall through varied musical passages and great musicianship. These songs take you on a journey, with just the right amount of repetition to drive the riffs home without becoming monotonous. The thick and heavy guitar tone is undeniably doom, cut straight from the Tony Iommi cloth, but there are also many prog-type moments that out AGAINST NATURE as the RUSH fans we know they are.
The fact that the band has not put a monetary value on much of its work really drives the point home that these cats are serious about getting their music heard. It's almost like this is music they HAD to create. Now get over to www.againstnature.us and start downloading! (They also have stuff for sale, and I'm sure they accept donations, so we can keep this world of music open to us for some time…)
