  • (Deranged)
  • Familiar, but charming.

  • Toronto's CAREER SUICIDE play a cutting-edge blend of punk and rock they've dubbed "punk rock." Trademark characteristics include speed, pluck and verve. Most of the emphasis here is on the first. Ten aggressive songs whiz by in approximately 20 minutes, with nary a second wasted on frills or surprises that would challenge the rush. The lyrics focus on personal conflict and are uttered as ferociously as you'd expect. For better if you're an 80s hardcore purist, or worse if you're a heathen who isn't, there's little here that hasn't been heard in some form before. Highlight "Recipe for Disaster" is fondly reminiscent of CIRCLE JERKS, while the legacy of BLACK FLAG looms large throughout. Other choice reference points include ANGRY SAMOANS, ADOLESCENTS, FLIPPER and GANG GREEN.

CAREER SUICIDE do what they do with competence and integrity, but with the same degree of innovation found at a Renaissance Fair. Renaissance Fairs may make great outings for lance enthusiasts, but they're not going to convert anyone else. For those who rely on 80s-style hardcore punk for their musical caffeine, "Attempted Suicide" should serve as a solid espresso shot. The band certainly have enough passion and honesty to successfully invoke the spirit of their musical golden age. That being said, this isn't punk meant to shock or challenge: it's punk meant to rock a particular punk tradition. If that's your brand of revivalism, this is your kind of fare
