This EP shows what London’s HEAT FROM A DEAD STAR are up to. At this point it is hard to tell what direction the group may take when it records it's debut full-length release. Each track on here is so different from it’s predecessor that it’s kind of difficult to see the big picture. “Elusive Ways” opens things up with some raggedy bass and atmospheric guitar/keys. Can’t say that I dig the drum sound at all. “Joan” has sort of a SPACEMEN 3/FLYING SAUCER ATTACK vibe to it (it has quite an annoying percussion thing as well). The instrumental title track has some decent guitar playing, but just sort of flops around - kind of disappointing. The “Extended Mixes” portion is also instrumental, with the old jungle rhythms that hearken back to the days when techno appeared to have promise.
I can’t say that I’m too blown away by this. If they want the full-length to be worth our time, my advice would be to really rethink the drums and percussion sound overall. There are some good ideas here, but it’s too early to tell if this band will amount to anything. The full-length is gonna come out on Ace Of Hearts Records (MISSION OF BURMA’s original label) so we’ll see.
