Blasting the concept of "sophomore slump" into a million pieces, Norway's premier hard rock band AUDREY HORNE has dropped another spectacular release on the unsuspecting underground populous. Much like 2005's stellar "No Hay Banda", "Le Fol" is a perfect illustration of drama without pretension, heaviness with listenability, and the development of an unhampered, contemporary rock sound that should please critics and rock fans alike.
Stratospheric moments abound throughout this 12-song beast of an album. Although quality songwriting is given precedence over noodling (the longest song barely passes the 6-minute mark), comparisons to prime MEGADETH, and QUEENSRYCHE are inevitable. The main difference, however, is that AUDREY HORNE adds their distinctive brand of Euro-style finesse and brevity to the proceedings; Toschie's granular, unassuming vocals focus on sweeping melodies rather than swinging for the fences a la Dickinson or Tate. The near-symphonic solo break in "Threshold" and the driving bass and drum intro to "In the End" exhibit the same poise and virtuosity of "Empire" or "Operation: Mindcrime". "Bright Lights" layers captivating guitars, keys, and fancy stickwork to set up a booming, all-hell-breaks-loose crescendo. The disc's closer "So Long Euphoria" builds high drama over ALICE IN CHAINS-style riffage, ending much too soon and necessitating repeat listens.
AUDREY HORNE may not have a PR team plastering their name all over the internet, but they should. This is one band that truly deserves the attention of hard rock fans. The album is set to be released in the US within the next few months, and four of these new tracks can be downloaded directly from their official website. Don't let this one pass you by.
