Remember when the term "punk/metal hybrid" was something to actually look forward to? Oakland, CA's ANNIHILATION TIME certainly do, and this here 3-song 7" EP "Cosmic Unconsciousness" serves as a shining example of just how sick and twisted rock music can be. First impressions may lead some to think that there's no metal to be had, with the livid vocals and raucous rock 'n roll riffs showing off the band's punk rock colors. But that ain't all this one has to offer, as the opening riff of "Reality" sounds right out of the NWOBHM (not to mention a guitar tone that sounds nearly identical to the first MAIDEN disc). If that weren't enough, the slow breaks show that these guys have heard a SABBATH record or two in their day. From there, the mosh pit ready "Feel It" matches a deadly thrash intro with some serious rock licks, and "Annihilate" is a nonstop 2-minute display of guitar string abuse that leaves the listener begging for more.
"Cosmic Unconsciousness" is a great way to relive the excitement of "Join the Army" era SUICIDAL TENDENCIES and the first C.O.C. album, and to remember a time when punk and metal fans were (almost) united in peaceful harmony. Note: this here EP has been repackaged along with the band's 2003 EP "Bad Reputation" on the CD "II". Now there are no excuses.
