Three or four years ago, the first disc from the Swiss instrumental groovers MONKEY THREE took fans of prog and psych by storm. Three years in the making, the jam-heavy follow-up is a must-hear for fans of FLOYD, HAWKWIND, or SABBATH.
These six lengthy epics embody modern psychedelic music at its zenith. Picasso's Waters-style basslines steal the show, taking the front seat in larger-than-life excursions like "Je Et Bikkje". Keys and synths swish and flitter, the percussion changes more often than Cher changes outfits, and cozy, tranquil intros develop into thundering SABBATH riffs and furious guitar and bass shootouts. "Last Moulinao" is absolutely riveting, progressing from light bongos to a black hole din of riffs and pounding, growing to monstrous proportions. The disc ends with a very curious, SCORPIONS / MSG guitar-driven track entitled "Once Upon a Time in the West". Once again, MONKEY 3 has made a superb case for vocalist-free rock 'n roll.
