I love a good challenge. My mission, should I choose to accept it: review a CD from a Colorado rock band by the name of DOGMAN. Sounds easy enough, right? But there’s a catch… I only have 3 songs totally a mere 10 minutes, 17 seconds of music to judge them by. Pfft… mere child’s play for someone of my prowess. Bring it on.
For starters, without even pressing Play you can tell since they’re a 3-piece that just so happens to have the same name as a KING’S X album that either they just love our site or that they were heavily influenced by one of the greatest power trios in rock history. And sure enough, once you start listening, the latter becomes apparent—though not nearly as soulful (especially in the vocals dept.) the influence is loud and clear. The opening track on here, “Go Off”, is a tad misleading with the B tuning and slight hardcore tinge on the vocals, but with “Dashboard Jesus” and “You Da Star” you find out what this band is really about—fun, straight-to-the-point bar rock that’s so pure that you can almost smell the cigarette smoke and beer in the air. The vocal melodies are dead on and everyone is pulling their weight here; in other words, this is the definition of a successful trio. These boys know what they is doin’.
This upcoming album will be the band’s fourth (apparently they’re well on their way to a fifth—slow down, boys…you’ll hurt yourselves!). You can actually download all three of these tracks on the band’s website (see below) and if you’re planning on having a raucous party anytime soon (a really short one, anyway) I would certainly recommend you slap these tracks on your hard drive.
