  • ANTIGAMA - "Zeroland", 2005 (Selfmadegod)
  • Polish avant-grind at its finest.

  • Impressive! That's what I thought upon hearing this album by Polish grindsters ANTIGAMA, who before this released two more albums and a shitload of split cds, making "Zeroland" their third full-length. Well, ‘full-length' is a pretty relative term since despite having 9 tracks the whole thing clocks in at no more than 24:05. For this kind of music, that's enough though.

ANTIGAMA play a kind of extreme music that they describe as ‘forward thinking metal-avantgrind'. And pretentious as that may sound it's actually pretty accurate. The first 8 songs on "Zeroland" are quite brutal snippets of music with an average length of 1 to 2 minutes that sound like a head-on collision between VOÏVOD and MASTODON, played at 45 RPM!! The only long one is the album-closing title track, consisting of noises and bits of dialogue and generally being a bit too avant-gardish even for a weird music buff like yours truly. But it doesn't matter because the stuff that precedes it is all great. Lots of great dissonant riffing and ultra-fast rhythms and tempo-changes, all made relatively accessible (and I do mean ‘relatively') by their length (or should I say shortness) which makes you want to play this album over and over again.
